Fantom Magazine. Issue 01

Fantom Magazine, Issue 01 was a really fun project to work on. Veteran skateboard journalist Dave Carnie was the Creative Director, and professional roller skater Karli Craig was (and currently is) the Editor-in-Chief. This was Karli’s first magazine, and she did a great job. I was brought in to put all their ideas into a printable AND digestible format. It was a challenging and rewarding project with many twists and turns, but we made the tight deadline, and this 100-page premier issue is something we can all be very proud of. Go grab an issue here while you still can! Check out some of the feature I designed below.

“A barani flip is an aerial maneuver consisting of a front flip and a 180 degree turn (half twist). This trick is performed in a number of sports including dancing, gymnastics, cheerleading, trampoline, cliff diving, wrestling, aggressive inline skating, and freerunning…The trick is named after Alfonso Barani , an Italian circus performer, who first performed it in 1881.” —edited from Wikipedia

Dave Carnie had the idea to run this article upside-down, to go along with the barani flip. He already had the partially upside-down title idea. I fancied it up, and casually mentioned that I could probably make the word “barani” appear upside-down in every instance in the copy. He loved the idea and I figured out how to flow upside-down text. A really cool gimmick and really awesome collaborating with Dave.
